中国城市规划学会（UPSC）常务副理事长兼秘书长，《城市规划》杂志执行主编，兼任国际城市与区域规划师学会（ISOCARP）副主席（出版）、全国城乡规划教育专业指导委员会副主任、全国高等教育城乡规划专业评估委员会副主任、住建部城市设计专家委员会副主任，中国人民大学、同济大学、哈尔滨工业大学、南京大学兼职教授。
主要从事城市规划政策、城市总体规划方面的研究，代表性成果包括《城乡规划与相关规划的法理关系》《城乡规划技术标准体系研究》、国家标准《城乡规划基本术语》等，自1995年起为《城市规划》杂志撰写“编者絮语”两百多篇，著有《试论城市规划中的公共利益》《试论城市规划社会功能的影响因素——兼析城市规划的社会地位》《论城乡规划管理行政权力的责任空间范畴——写在<城乡规划法>颁布实施之际》《建立基于要素与程序控制的规划技术标准体系》《包容性语境下的规划价值重塑及学科转型》等论文。相关研究主要包括基金项目、住建部委托研究、中国科学院咨询项目、中国科协政策研究项目多项，涉及城镇化、规划体系、规划标准、总体规划等领域。参与制定联合国《城市与区域规划国际准则》、人居三《新城市议程》等重要文件。

Dr. Shi Nan is the Executive Deputy President of the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC), the national organization of professional planners. His voluntary roles includeDeputy Chair of National Steering Commission for Planning Education, Vice Director of National Accreditation Board for Planning Curriculum, Vice Director for National Panel on Urban Design,professor at universities includingRenmin University of China, Harbin Institute of Technology, Tongji University, Nanjing University etc.His international commitments include Vice President of International Society of City and Regional Planners(ISOCARP), affiliated expert for UN-Habitat and other international agencies,etc.
Serving as editor for City Planning Review, the respected academic journal in China, for over 20 years, Dr. Shi Nan’s monthly critical column Editor’s Noteis the mostpopular planning literature in planning.His major books include The State of China’s Cities, Some Observations Concerning China’s Urban Development, China Urban Development Report,Planning for Scientific Developmentetc.
Focused on policy analysis and city comprehensive planning, Dr. Shi Nan’s 35-year professional background includes Senior Planner at China Academy of Urban Planning & Design(CAUPD), advisory services to Moscow, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing and other Chinese cities. He has been very active in major planning and research projects includingRevision of National Planning Act of P.R. China, Framework for the National Planning Standards and Norms, National Standard for Terminology of Urban and Rural Planning, A History of Planning Sciences in China, Contemporary Glossary for Planningetc.
As the chief executive of UPSC, Dr. Shi Nan has organized several academic and professional events in China, including the most high-profile Annual Planning Conference, attended by thousands of professors and professional planners, Planners Go West, the most popular pro-bono events devoted to the Western China development. His latest professional contributions include panel expert for UN-Habitat International Guidelines for Urban and Territorial Planning, New Urban Agenda adopted by UN Habitat III, etc.
